Carter is clearly not comfortable with conflict (his body language says it all) – we know already that he’s actually kind of an awkward guy.

Disagree. You can clearly see Carter’s very angry – balled fists, raised shoulders as if ready to fight. He wouldn’t either be interrupting Curtis nor trying to get him to speak to him if he was a coward or afraid of conflict. He just threw a guy across the room, remember?
Carter has strong values. He didn’t take advantage of the guy he’s in love with, and doesn’t want it to happen to somebody else, either.
Oh I agree that he is angry at this situation, and I didn’t doubt that he was going to stand up to this guy.
I just appreciate Carter’s following actions a lot more because of his usually awkward nature and the fact that he’ll do it regardless.
