Y’know, Adrian, there’s just no possible way you could cause Carter any more stress than by saying what you said here. Now he’s going to be worried for the next few days about you putting yourself into the hospital or something, and try to draw his emotions away from you. Because you just told him that you couldn’t do what he wanted from you, and he’s much more gentlemanly about it than you’ve ever given him credit for.

He made no secret that he found you really attractive, and that he wanted to bone you (or more likely, that he wanted you to bone him). And then after you played the boyfriend card, he backed completely off. Then you told him you were single (at the party, though you probably don’t remember it), and he still didn’t press his possible advantage. He’s treated you like a gentleman should — and he’s gone out of his way to spend God only knows how much in fuel to help a club that he wasn’t even part of, he bought you a Slurpee, he shared information about his childhood with you, he didn’t try to grope you at the pizza place, he got flustered when you kissed him — and he even left quickly enough that your parents wouldn’t come down on you like the fist of God after what happened in the kitchen. All of which happened, by the way, because you initiated it, and escalated it by calling attention to his body showing just how fucking much the simple act of kissing you turned him on. AND THEN ESCALATED IT MORE BY YOU — NOT HIM, BUT YOU — GRABBING HIS HAND AND PUTTING IT ON YOUR CROTCH.

And then you turn around and bitch at Maria for talking with him about you because she’s the only other link into your circle of friends that he seems to have.

So yeah, you’re a basket case… but you’re turning down a true friend (who kind of objects to “with benefits” status), and if there’s one thing that basket cases need it’s true friends. You need Maria. You need Carter. You need therapy, but that won’t work without friends. (Come to think of it, you also need martial arts, if only to learn to center yourself.)

You gotta understand this, Adrian: you — not Carter, but YOU — are the one throwing this particular friendship away right now.

And if you want it back, you’re the one who has to reach out and make it happen.
